A race of non-corporeal, parasitic aliens who go from planet to planet looking for hosts have come to Earth and basically taken over the human race. It's believed that, once inside a body, all memories of the host human are gone. Some few free humans remain hidden from them, forming a resistance group. When an alien Seeker captures a girl named Melanie and puts a Wanderer in her body, she hopes to find out where the remaining humans are gathered, but Melanie, a strong fighter able to converse with the alien in her commandeered body, convinces the Wanderer to say nothing. Disappointed by the lack of progress (though suspecting an empathy for the human), the Seeker informs the Wanderer that she'll be removed and placed in a new host while she herself will enter Melanie. With human lives at risk, Melanie convinces Wanderer to run away and hide out with the humans, but finding them doesn't mean they'll allow an alien presence among them. Jared (Melanie's boyfriend) wants her dead, but Jeb (Melanie's uncle) wants to wait, and Ian, tasked with guarding her, finds himself siding with Jeb. As Ian begins to fall for Melanie, a strange love triangle develops, with Ian wanting Wanderer (inhabiting Melanie's body), Jared wanting Melanie (imprisoned inside her own body), and no one knowing any way to separate the two without killing both. When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world. This movie is designed for a specific group of people, tween to teenage girls. <br/><br/>If you're looking for a bad ass, action packed movie with an ass kicking female protagonist, this IS NOT it. That's the only reason I went to see this, because the trailer actually looked pretty good. Save yourself some money and just watch the trailer, I would rate that a 7/8. <br/><br/>The biggest dilemma in the whole movie is whether she should kiss someone or not. You can completely see the Bella in her. So if you're a guy or girl that likes intellectual, action movies where romanticism comes second, don't see this movie. It's a complete waste of time and money, designed for teenage girls during that time of the month. So this is basically Twilight albeit with a slightly different story line. I am not a massive fan of any of the Twilight films which I found agonisingly slow and badly acted and with little or nothing happening throughout but I am not the target audience.<br/><br/>Nor am I for The Host it seems. My wife on the other-hand loves them all. Go figure!<br/><br/>The premise of the film about an alien invasion that has taken over the human "host bodies", whilst not a new concept, is a good one. I like the idea that there is a resistance a-la Terminator that is keeping a low profile from the alien regime. And I like the idea of the internal conflict that the lead role experiences with the human body she has entered. That said, sometimes it is really annoying. The character "Mel" I find annoying to say the least and acts like a spoiled brat when she doesn't get her own way. Lines like "I hate you" were frequently heard.<br/><br/>What really sucked for me wasn't the ridiculous romances that "Wanda" (the parasite inside "Mel") experienced, it wasn't the weak resistance leader that Jeff Bridges (shame on you) played, it wasn't the lame "seeker" that just wouldn't quit, no. What really sucked for me was that just like Twilight, nothing happened! I felt like I'd bought a Mustang but had been sold a pony, like I was prepared for a roller-coaster but ended up on the tea-cup ride.<br/><br/>It wasn't an offensive film but it was one that I successfully fell asleep in about three times.<br/><br/>To summarise, if you need a good sleep, this is the film for you. The Host is a step up from the endless metaphorical lectures and gaping plot holes of Niccol’s last film, In Time, but its muffled emotions, delivered with Twilight-esque blank-eyed calm, put it in the same category of a creative idea hamstrung in execution.
